Whether you love to read anything in print or have never met a book you liked,
we have something for you in the RBHS Media Center!

Looking for something to read?
  • Click on the Athena icon on all RBHS Media Center computers and many classroom computers to access material available in our media center.  You can access Athena ONLY at RBHS.  Search by subject, title, author, or "reviewed by" to see what we have, where we have it, and what RBHS students and staff have to say about it.
  • Click on Novelist to access a database that allows you to read book reviews, look for titles by age group (ex. young adult), subject (ex. sports), genre (ex. science fiction), and more. You can even find books like one you have read and loved (ex. books like Lovely Bones).
  • Click on Reading Rants, a web site of book reviews written by a funny and sassy reviewer.
  • Click on teenreads.com, a web site designed to bring teens information about their favorite books, authors, series, and characters.  Lots of fun with reader polls and contests, author interviews and features.
  • Stop by Mrs. McCutcheon's office to talk about the books and book reviews she's been reading and to hear what other students are saying about the books they've checked out.
  • Look for books displayed throughout the library with the special laminated Reviewed By cards.
  • Browse Mrs. McCutcheon's RBHS Recommends book display in the fiction room or Mrs. Roscow's themed displays at the sign-in desk.
Looking for somewhere to read?
  • Curl up in one of our three easy chairs or the new butterfly chair or climb into our rocker. We are trying to make your library a comfortable, quiet break from the busyness and noise and stress of a typical day.  Let our music block out the rest of the world or  listen to your own.
Want to share what you think of a book?
  • Stop by Mrs. McCutcheon's desk to discuss and rate the book you just finished (4 stars is the best rating).  She'll get your review into Athena and give you a piece of candy for your help.
Abe Award and Read for a Lifetime Reading Award Programs
We lump the two programs into our Basket of Books campaign: Read a basket of books and win prizes!  All books from both the Abe and RFL lists are now on display and ready for check-out in the Fiction Room.  Register for one or both award programs by September 15 in the Fiction Room and become eligible for prizes and extra credit (see your English teacher for more information on that) as you read and discuss each book with Mrs. McCutcheon.
Abraham Lincoln Illinois High School Book Award
The Abe Award is given annually to the author of the book voted as most outstanding by participating high school students in Illinois and is sponsored by the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA).

Each student who reads and discusses at least four titles from the list before February 23, 2007, is eligible to vote for the book he or she thinks deserves the Abe Award for 2007.

Read for a Lifetime Award
RFL is sponsored by the Illinois State Library and Waldenbooks and features both fiction and nonfiction for Illinois high school students.  Each student who reads and discusses at least four titles from the list before April 5, 2007, will receive a certificate from Secretary of State Jesse White and a discount coupon for books at Waldenbooks.
