Hurricanes
Project Description
As Introduction to Science students, you are studying the science of natural disasters. You are to focus on hurricanes: their storm track, strength, devastation, cost.  You will plot a hurricane's path on a map and cite your sources on in a Reference List that you save to the M: drive.  Your only source for this assignment is the Internet.  You must cite information from at least three different authoritative web sites.

Search Smart
Just typing Hurricane Katrina into a database or search engine will result in MILLIONS of sites.  Don't waste time.  Get right to the source you need with Search Smart skills.
  • Put quotation marks around your hurricane's name ex: "Hurricane Hugo"
  • Put quotation marks around any phrases ex: "death toll"
  • Combine words and/or phrases with AND (all capital letters)
ex: "Hurricane Inez" AND "crop damage"
  • Improve your chances of getting authoritative sources by search archives
             ex: "Hurricane Frederic" AND archive
  • When in a site about several hurricanes, use the Ctrl/Find feature on your keyboard

Some sources cover hurricanes in general.  Some cover certain information about many specific hurricanes.  Some focus entirely on one hurricane.

General Hurricane Information
National Climatic Data Center is an excellent site.  Type your hurricane  in the search box.

Tropmet.com is an archive site that you can search by hurricane.  Excellent source for photos and/or information.  More information on some hurricanes than on others.

Weather Underground: Hurricane Archive is a site that will prove to be a treasure chest of hurricane information.
  • Search by the year of your hurricane OR
  • Scroll down the right column for articles about various named hurricanes OR
  • Scroll down the right column for historical hurricane statistics
Specific Hurricane Information and Photos
Search engines like Ask and  Ixquick and Clusty will give you as many results as Google, PLUS they'll rank the results and suggest other options.  Don't ever search with only one search engine.

Remember to use your Search Smart research skills when searching in these search engines.
